Air India’s decision to appoint Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director marks more than a leadership change. It signals the beginning of what could be the most demanding phase of the Tata Group-owned carrier’s transformation.
After nearly four years of stabilisation, integration and fleet expansion, Air India now faces the far more difficult challenge of consistently delivering a world-class passenger experience while converting massive investments into sustainable profits.
The appointment, announced by the airline’s Board on Wednesday, reflects the recognition that Air India’s next battle will be fought not in boardrooms but in daily operations.
From rebuilding to execution
When the Tata Group regained control of Air India in January 2022, the airline inherited years of underinvestment, ageing aircraft, service inconsistencies, operational inefficiencies and a fragmented organisational structure.
Outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson spent the past few years laying the foundation for revival. That included integrating Air India with Vistara, beginning one of the world’s largest aircraft acquisition programmes, revamping governance structures and initiating fleet modernisation.
While these were critical first steps, they represented only the beginning of a much longer transformation journey.
The next phase demands consistent execution across thousands of daily operational decisions, improving on-time performance, reducing delays, increasing aircraft utilisation, enhancing customer service, integrating technology platforms and ensuring profitability despite rising competition.
That is where Gebremariam’s experience assumes significance.
Why the Board chose him
Air India’s Board said it conducted a global search before unanimously selecting Gebremariam.
The choice appears to be based on one overriding consideration: his proven ability to transform a state-owned airline into a globally respected and commercially successful aviation group.
During his decade-long leadership of Ethiopian Airlines Group, Gebremariam oversaw a remarkable expansion that saw revenues increase more than fourfold while the fleet nearly tripled in size.
More importantly, Ethiopian Airlines achieved this growth while maintaining profitability, operational discipline and high service standards, an achievement few full-service airlines globally have matched over such an extended period.
For Air India, those credentials directly address its current priorities.
The real challenges begin now
Despite visible progress under Tata ownership, Air India continues to face formidable operational challenges.
The airline must induct hundreds of new aircraft over the coming years while simultaneously refurbishing existing cabins.
It has to improve punctuality and operational reliability at a time when airport congestion, supply-chain disruptions and aircraft maintenance constraints continue to affect global aviation.
International competition is also intensifying.
West Asian carriers continue to dominate long-haul traffic connecting India with Europe and North America, while Indian competitors such as IndiGo are rapidly expanding their international footprint.
Air India also has to establish itself as a credible global hub airline capable of retaining Indian passengers who currently transit through hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
Building that capability requires far more than aircraft purchases. It demands precision in network planning, engineering excellence, superior customer service and efficient airport operations.
A leader shaped by operational discipline
Gebremariam’s experience at Ethiopian Airlines closely aligns with many of these requirements.
Beyond expanding international routes, he developed maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, aviation training infrastructure and globally competitive hub operations.
These areas remain strategic priorities for Air India as it seeks to reduce dependence on overseas maintenance facilities and strengthen India’s aviation ecosystem.
His emphasis on workforce development could also prove valuable as Air India integrates employees from different legacy organisations while recruiting thousands of new professionals.
Expectations will be significantly higher
The timing of the leadership transition also raises expectations.
Unlike in 2022, Air India can no longer attribute service shortcomings solely to inherited problems.
Passengers increasingly expect tangible improvements in cabin experience, digital services, operational reliability and hospitality.
Investors and industry observers will also begin evaluating whether the airline’s unprecedented capital expenditure translates into stronger financial performance.
In other words, the transformation will now be judged less by announcements and more by measurable operational outcomes.
Chairman’s confidence
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said Air India has completed its initial stabilisation and integration phase and is now entering a critical period of execution and expansion.
He said Gebremariam’s experience in building one of the world’s most efficient and profitable airline groups makes him ideally suited to lead Air India’s next phase of growth.
Accepting the role, Gebremariam described it as an honour to lead Air India at a historic moment and said the opportunity to build a world-class global airline that reflects India’s growing economic stature was uniquely exciting.
A defining test
For the Tata Group, the appointment represents another strategic bet in its long-term effort to restore Air India to global prominence.
The airline today has strong financial backing, an ambitious fleet expansion programme and one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
The missing ingredient is consistent operational excellence.
Whether Gebremariam can replicate the Ethiopian Airlines success story in the vastly larger and more complex Indian aviation market will determine not only Air India’s future but also India’s ambition of becoming a major global aviation hub.
The foundation has largely been built.
The harder task, delivering world-class performance every single day, begins now.
