Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Ltd’s 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant (USTPP) at Chapar in lower Assam’s Dhubri district.
The project involves an investment of around ₹48,000 crore and is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs during construction and around 5,000 jobs once operational. Commissioning is scheduled in phases from December 2030.
Four units to power Assam
The Chapar plant will comprise four 800 MW units and use ultra-supercritical technology, along with high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards.
Once commissioned, the plant is expected to provide power for Assam’s household, commercial and industrial requirements.
₹63,000 crore power investment
The Chapar project forms part of a ₹63,000-crore power investment in Assam.
This includes around ₹48,000 crore for the thermal power plant and approximately ₹15,000 crore for two Pumped Storage Plants with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW through Adani Green Energy Ltd.
Jobs and local business opportunities
“The upcoming 3,200 MW Thermal Power Project by Adani Power represents an investment of ₹48,000 crore. The project will fuel industries, give businesses the power to scale, and help bring affordable electricity to homes,” Adani Group, Director, Jeet Adani, said.
He said the project would also create jobs and open opportunities for local contractors, suppliers and businesses.
Project follows competitive bidding
Adani Power emerged as the successful bidder in October 2025 through a competitive bidding process to establish the 3,200 MW power plant.
The company subsequently received the Letter of Award from Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) in November 2025.
Focus on Assam’s energy base
The company said the project will strengthen Assam’s power generation capacity and support its growing household, commercial and industrial requirements.
The Chapar plant is expected to become a major addition to the state’s energy infrastructure, with phased commissioning scheduled from December 2030.
