izmo Microsystems Develops Pitch Detector For Military Aircraft

CW Bureau ·

izmo Ltd’s semiconductor subsidiary, izmo Microsystems Pvt. Ltd., has developed an indigenous Pitch Detector, a critical avionics component used in military aircraft and helicopters, and completed its defence qualification.

The component senses an aircraft’s pitch attitude and provides correction data to the gyromagnetic compass navigation system. It is used across multiple military aircraft and helicopter platforms currently in active service.

Development addresses import dependence

The original foreign-made Pitch Detector faced irregular and limited supplies from its overseas manufacturer, creating operational challenges for platforms dependent on the component.

To address the supply constraints, izmo Microsystems undertook a complete indigenisation programme to develop a compatible Indian replacement, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening domestic supply chain resilience.

Component reengineered without original design documents

The company reengineered the original component without access to its design documentation. It redesigned the electronics using modern technology and manufactured a compatible replacement in India.

The component was developed and manufactured at the company’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR)-recognised advanced semiconductor packaging facility in Bengaluru.

Meets military reliability standards

The indigenous Pitch Detector has successfully completed qualification to the military reliability standard MIL-PRF-38534.

The development demonstrates izmo Microsystems’ ability to undertake end-to-end product development, covering design, engineering, manufacturing and qualification.

Company eyes wider defence opportunities

The company said its integrated capabilities could help address further indigenisation opportunities in defence and aerospace, particularly in cases involving imported components that have become obsolete, difficult to procure or unsupported by their original manufacturers.

Its technology platform combines advanced electronics design with high-reliability semiconductor packaging and manufacturing. These capabilities support its activities across defence, aerospace, silicon photonics and other advanced semiconductor applications.

With the increasing emphasis on indigenous procurement and import substitution, izmo Microsystems sees opportunities to apply its engineering and manufacturing capabilities across the defence electronics sector.
