GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Ltd, has commissioned its 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) purified terephthalic acid (PTA) manufacturing plant at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Karnataka.
The commissioning marks the completion of an extensive revival and refurbishment exercise undertaken by GAIL after acquiring the facility through the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) in 2023.
Plant revived after insolvency process
The facility was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Ltd, which subsequently underwent CIRP. GAIL acquired the company under a resolution plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and undertook extensive engineering, technological and operational work to revive the plant.
The commissioning marks a milestone in GAIL’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector. The company acknowledged the contribution of the GMPL team, technology partners, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders.
PTA to support polyester industry
PTA is a key raw material used to manufacture polyester fibre, yarn, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin and other polyester-based products. These materials are widely used in the textile, apparel and packaging industries.
With an installed capacity of 1.25 MTPA, the facility is expected to increase domestic availability of PTA, reduce import dependence and support India’s downstream polyester industry.
Strategic location supports logistics
Located near New Mangalore Port, the plant has dedicated logistics infrastructure to facilitate the movement of raw materials and finished products.
GAIL will market the PTA under the brand name G-Tex, using its established marketing network and customer reach.
The commissioning represents the revival of a major industrial asset and marks a new phase in GAIL’s petrochemical growth strategy.
