Cholamandalam Finance To Expand AI Use Across Business Operations

Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company Ltd. (Chola) is exploring artificial intelligence (AI)-led interventions in its collections business and plans to extend the technology to sales and credit functions with a strong focus on governance and accountability.

In his message to shareholders, Executive Chairman Vellayan Subbiah said technology continued to be a key enabler across customer acquisition, origination, underwriting, disbursement, collections, reporting and analytics.

Technology Focus

Subbiah said investments in technology were helping improve turnaround times, strengthen internal controls, enhance productivity and deliver a better customer experience.

As the business becomes increasingly digital, the company continues to prioritise cyber resilience and information security, he said.

Emerging risks

The company’s enterprise risk management framework covers credit, liquidity, capital, fraud, cyber security, compliance and emerging risks.

It is also strengthening scorecards, portfolio monitoring, model governance, stress testing and segmented collection strategies.

Growth Plans

Subbiah said India’s economic growth, supported by infrastructure development, formalisation, digital adoption and expanding credit access, would continue to create opportunities for financial services companies.

He said Chola was well positioned to capitalise on these opportunities with its strong brand, diversified businesses, extensive distribution network and experienced teams.

The company’s priorities include sustainable growth, maintaining asset quality, strengthening customer relationships, investing in people and technology, and creating long-term value for stakeholders.

Gold Loan Expansion

Subbiah said the company’s gold loan business, launched in FY26, recorded assets under management (AUM) of ₹1,804 crore in its first year of operations through 119 branches.

The company plans to add more than 300 gold loan branches during FY27, focusing on customers in and around its existing markets.

SME business

Small and Medium Enterprises business continued to support India’s entrepreneurial economy. Disbursements stood at ₹7,312 crore, while AUM grew 41% to ₹9,338 crore.

“Our focus remains on prudent customer selection, strong cash-flow assessment and close monitoring, while supporting enterprises that contribute to local employment and economic activity,” he said.

Loan Against Property

On LAP, he said disbursements increased to ₹20,459 crore, while AUM grew to ₹52,295 crore. Chola will continue to deepen this business in smaller towns and rural areas while retaining its presence in Tier I and Tier II markets.
