ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has strengthened its advanced steel portfolio by securing Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licences under two new standards, including the first All India First BIS Licence for quenched and tempered steel plates.
The company has become the first steel manufacturer in India to receive the All India First BIS Licence for IS 2062 (Part 2):2026, the newly introduced standard for Hot Rolled Quenched & Tempered (Q&T) Steel Plates, Sheets, Strips and Wide Flats.
AM/NS India has also secured a BIS licence under IS 19210:2025 for Pre-Painted Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) Alloy Coated Steel Strip and Sheet.
Opens access to public projects
The new certifications strengthen AM/NS India’s ability to supply certified specialised steel products for state-funded infrastructure, defence and public sector projects where BIS certification is a mandatory procurement requirement.
The IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 licence also creates a domestic supply source for Q&T steel plates, potentially reducing dependence on imported material in specialised applications.
The certified products are manufactured at AM/NS India’s facilities in Hazira and Pune, expanding the company’s commercial offering across high-load structural applications and corrosion-resistant coated steel products.
Q&T steel targets demanding applications
IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 is the first BIS standard specifically developed for quenched and tempered steel plates.
Q&T steel is produced through specialised heat treatment that delivers high strength and durability. Its strength-to-weight characteristics can enable lighter structures capable of carrying higher loads.
The material is used in bridges, heavy engineering equipment, mining machinery, offshore structures and marine applications, among other sectors where structural performance and safety are critical.
AM/NS India said its steel has already been used in several critical national assets, including the Chenab Rail Bridge and naval platforms such as INS Surat, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Malvan.
Zn-Al-Mg coating targets longer service life
The second certification covers pre-painted zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel products under IS 19210:2025.
AM/NS India’s offering is based on Optigal, ArcelorMittal’s zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel technology. The company said the coating provides higher corrosion resistance and improved cut-edge protection compared with conventional colour-coated steel.
The products are targeted at roofing and cladding, pre-engineered buildings, infrastructure, warehousing, railways and industrial construction.
The enhanced corrosion protection can also contribute to longer service life and lower maintenance requirements in applications exposed to demanding environments.
25 BIS licences
With the latest additions, AM/NS India currently holds 25 BIS licences, including three All India First Licences under IS 3039, IS 18809:2024 and IS 2062 (Part 2):2026.
The company said the latest certifications reflect its focus on developing specialised steel products aligned with evolving requirements in infrastructure and heavy engineering, while supporting the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
The two new standards also strengthen the domestic availability of advanced steel technologies for sectors requiring higher strength, durability and corrosion resistance.
