Sigma Advanced Systems Ltd has secured an order worth $102 million (₹973 crore) from a NATO customer for the manufacture and supply of Base Bleed (BB) Units, with execution scheduled over 12 months.
The order marks a significant step in the company’s strategy to expand its capabilities across the 155 mm artillery ammunition manufacturing value chain and strengthen its presence in international defence markets.
Expands artillery ammunition portfolio
The order builds on Sigma’s existing capabilities in manufacturing 155 mm artillery shells and fuzes. The addition of Base Bleed Units expands its product portfolio and advances its efforts to develop an integrated manufacturing offering for artillery ammunition.
Base Bleed Units are specialised components fitted into the rear section of artillery projectiles. They release gas during flight to reduce aerodynamic drag, helping extend the effective range of artillery shells.
The technology is widely used in modern 155 mm artillery ammunition and contributes to the operational effectiveness of long-range artillery systems.
Focus on vertical integration
With capabilities spanning artillery shells, fuzes and Base Bleed Units, Sigma is seeking to strengthen its ability to manufacture key components of complete 155 mm artillery rounds.
The company expects this integrated approach to reduce dependence on external suppliers, improve supply-chain control and support the delivery of comprehensive ammunition solutions.
The expansion also aligns with its focus on vertical integration and indigenous defence manufacturing under the Government’s Make in India initiative.
Targets global defence demand
The latest order reinforces Sigma’s efforts to expand its manufacturing expertise and address demand for advanced artillery ammunition in domestic and international markets.
“In defence manufacturing, customer confidence is built on consistent execution, reliable delivery and the ability to scale. The fact that customers continue to place repeat orders with us reflects the trust we have earned by meeting our commitments on previous programmes,” Sigma Advanced Systems, CEO and Executive Director, Sunil Kalidindi, said.
He said the company was strengthening its position as a manufacturing partner for customers seeking integrated capabilities across artillery shells, fuzes and Base Bleed Units.
The order further supports Sigma’s strategy of developing in-house manufacturing capabilities across complementary ammunition components while strengthening its position in the global defence supply chain.
